  • Enigmatic Byzantine coin - any ideas?

    Hello everyone,

I just received this enigmatic Byzantine coin and I'm having a hard time figuring out just what it is. My first thought was Sear Byz 1004 of Constans II, but that coin has ANA instead of A A A like on this piece, and is usually struck on a chunky roundish flan, not the thin "pizza slice" flan like this coin is. I thought about Justinian II and Leontius, since the triangular flan is more common for this time period, but the bust doesn't match for Justinian and the Leontius still doesn't solve the A A A problem. Can anyone help out and provide an idea as to what this is? Is it an imitative piece?

    Thanks and take care!
