Julian II Antioch

The style of this is completely different from anything I've seen from Antioch. Looks modern to me. Hard to judge the patina/fabric as the colors are totally off. The description says it's deep green and brown (and no mention of any silvering).

FWIW, here's my example. I remember when I bought this coin, I read that Julian had been resident in Antioch around this time, so the Antioch portraits probably were close to a genuine likeness.

The first looks completely fake to me, obverse and reverse.

Edit: But it's from a Stack's auction, so you'd think that it stands a reasonable chance of being authentic. Odd.

Doesn't matter who is selling it - still a terrible looking fake. Doesn't even look struck to me. Maybe machine pressed? I don't think I've seen that one before. Who is doing ancients at Stacks these days anyway? I went through the staff listing on Stack's site and could not find anyone who is versed in ancient coins. Scott Mitchell was the only name who had anything to do with ancients as far as I could tell and he only has a collecting interest in Roman denarii. Not sure who does their authenticating/vetting.

I contacted Cynthia LaCarbonara at Stack's as I have her email from being a bidder in their auctions. She sent me a nice email this morning and said the lot will be withdrawn. I asked who at Stack's is in charge of ancients and will share the information when I have it.

Thanks, Ben, for pointing out this lot so it could be reviewed.
