AV or electrum

I have a Michael VII Ducas Histamenon Nomisma Scyphate . (4.38 gm; 27 mm). Constantinople mint.SB 1868. I always thought it was gold until I used a Niton analizer which showed 60% gold. 35% silver. 4% copper . Is it now an electrum coin? I would appreciate any help. Dave

Gold or electrum

I guess, as in so many other matters, it is all a matter or which definition you accept. Whatever the alloy of this issue, it looks gold and is generally called such. Usually, rather than a narrow definition based on percentages of gold in the alloy, Byzantine collectors only label as electrum coins that show a noticeably pale color. OF course, that practice is not universal! In short, I think you could call it either with justification, but the issue is, in my limited experience, usually called gold. I wonder if your analysis is typical of the issue or whether others vary in some degree?

Thanks for that Mac, I shall call it gold and shall be on the lookout for a paler electrum. Regards Dave
