The Dr J S Vogelaar Collection

The Dr J S Vogelaar Collection

Before his retirement Dr J S Vogelaar was an antiquarian book dealer specialising in economic and numismatic books, a coin dealer and a free lance economist based in Ireland. His interest in Roman coins began in the mid-1980s and he built his Romano-British collection during the 1980s and 90s, continuing to add to it up until 2005.

The recent sale of his collection, without formal cataloguing, led me to consider the need for a published record of the man and the collection so that the new owners of his coins would at least have some connection with the provenance. Dr Vogelaar agreed to be interviewed and the result is an article that will be published in “The Celator” later this year. The article contains a list of the auctions in which the collection was dispersed and should be published this summer. When I know the exact publication date I will update this thread.

Hi

Thanks for the information. Was this 'just' a Romano-British collection? Any English coins in there? Brgds Alex

I'll look forward very much to the article, having bought a number of his coins at those auctions. Thank you for making that effort.

His numismatic collection also included English, Scottish, Irish and Dutch hammered, British and Dutch medals (mostly with an economic background), plus brockages and misstrikes in general, but mostly Roman.

Dear All

It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of Stoffel Vogelaar. I have just been informed that he passed away in his sleep on 2nd January 2010. Although he was not in the best of health, this was unexpected and a great shock. I hope to be posting an obituary on my blog in the next few days.

Best wishes

Lee Toone

Hi,

That is a shock.

I never got to tell him about the second IMPP CAES PII FF FR AVGG Carausius coin, having exchanged emails about the first one.

Your article will serve as a fitting (semi auto) biography that he was so glad to contribute to.

Regards,

Mauseus

Lee,

Such sad news. Did you get to finish your interview with him for your upcoming Celator article?

RIP.

Very sad news indeed!

Some 21 years ago, I was lucky to be able to buy some Carausius coins of his collection, not knowing he was such an authority concerning this theme.

A great loss! RIP

I hope to be able to get more information about Stoffel in the future.
All information about him would be helpful.

Thanks
Best Wishes

Hi Zach

Article is finished and should be published shortly. His family are keen for it to go ahead.

Best

Lee

I have just been told that my interview with Dr Vogelaar is going to be published in the May issue of "The Celator".

I can now also confirm that I have access to Dr Vogelaar's annotated RIC and collection list. If anyone would like more information on coins they have bought from the Vogelaar collections, I may be able to provide it, if they know the "V-number"!
