Recommendations for how to clean this coin?

Lars was nice enough to sell this coin to me at what I suspect was a bargain...assuming that it can be cleaned correctly.

Any recommendations on how to tackle this coin? I haven't been lucky with olive oil and uncleaned lots, so alternatives to this approach would be welcome.

Thanks!

Jeff

Gentle mechanical cleaning only, in my opinion (as a cleaner!).

I'm glad it was you who bought it. I got it cheap and didn't have the time and patience to clean it myself, but if it gets cleaned well, it could turn out to be a real beauty. I wish you luck!

Jérôme,

Mechanical cleaning with a dental pick or the like? The coin has that typical desert-like over-patina/dirt, which given the geographical minting location of the issue is not surprising. I can see green patina popping through here and there, so I'm assuming it can be obtained for the whole coin.

That's what I suspected from the picture; it should be confirmed using magnification, and if this layer can be removed through somewhat sharp pick; each patina is different and the assessment of the cleanability (to obtain a good result) is a matter of experience.

Yes, with soft pressure (if cleanable).

Jeff,

if you get a chance, please post the after-cleaning photo. I would be very interested to know how this one turned out. It looks like there are a lot of details beneath that layer of dirt.
