Fake Hadrian Aegyptos Denarius

Well, the economy doesn't seem to be affecting the fake ancient coin business. Here is one I won on eBay for around $175:

Hadrian, AR Denarius, 131-138 (?), Undetermined Eastern Mint
Bare head right
Egypt reclining left, sistrum in right hand, left arm resting on modius filled with grain ears, ibis at feet
18mm x 20mm, 3.39g
RIC II, 297 (Rome)
Ex Gantcho Zagorski, eBay, June 2006

Note: This specimen is a modern (Bulgarian?) forgery. I saw another example for sale by Gantcho Zagorski on eBay in 2008, but cannot find the image to compare.

Michael Kelly sent me an email a couple of days ago that Gantcho (dianacoins) now has another example up for sale in his store for $450! Note the reverse die match, but now paired with a Rome (!) mint obverse die.

Gosh, I never realized the market for these fakes had nearly tripled in 3 years! Maybe because this one is a rare mule of two different mints?

Sorry for your misfortunes. Both of these coins reinforce why eBay is a wasteland of con-artists and fakers.

A perfect example of why I stick with dealers like those at VCoins. I would have thought the coin you bought was genuine and through ebay there is little one can usually do about it.
