Macedonian Archaeologists Discover Ancient Coins near Ohrid

Dear fellow coin collectors,
Just saw an interesting article and want to share it with you:

31 March 2010 | Around 20 coins with the image of the father of Alexander the Great, Philip II of Macedon, and “other ancient Macedonian rulers” were found by archaeologists during excavations along the road between the south-western Macedonian towns of Ohrid and Struga, national media reported today...

Must have been a rookie journalist who didn't do his homework. The obverse is a head of Zeus, not Philip II.

More like FYROM. How can they call their country Macedonia when they only inhabit a fraction of a percent of what ancient Macedonia was.

Dear Nikolaos,
Does FYR Macedonia have any territorial claims on Greece and its part of the historical region of Macedonia?

It has an indirect territorial claim as over 50% of the historical region of Macedonia is in Greece. Worst are their historical claims (such as their flag depicting the Vergina Star) and are quite provocative. I agree that history belongs to the world and not to one country but they wish to exploit this historical name and region without even considering that the historical area of Macedonia is not only their territory but also in Greece and Albania. I would think a more accurate and less provocative name could be something like Northern Macedonia or New Republic of Macedonia.

Dear Nikolaos,
I have sympathies for people of both Greece and FYR Macedonia, and wishing them peace and prosperity, I do hope they will rise above the historical squabbles and grudges to become good neighbors.

I hope so too as such conflicts only affect the area in a negative way. We would all be a lot more prosperous if they did not exist.
